SKH Doctor on Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder and Multiple Sclerosis

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), a rare immune system condition, is frequently misdiagnosed due to its similarity with multiple sclerosis (MS). Although both present very similar symptoms, NMOSD primarily affects the eyes and spinal cord, while MS may also impact the brain. Dr Yong Kok Pin, Head and Consultant, Neurology Service, SKH, explained that Singapore has fewer than 200 NMOSD cases, and the disease is often misdiagnosed as common eye conditions or MS.
