Dr Riau Andri Kartasasmita

PhD

Academic Appointments

  • Assistant Professor SingHealth Duke-NUS Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Academic Clinical Programme

Profile

Dr. Riau obtained his master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) in 2012. He graduated with PhD in materials science and engineering from NTU in 2017. Under the tutelage of Profs. Subbu Venkatraman, Bo Liedberg, and Jodhbir Mehta, his research focused on the application of bioactive coatings for the biointegration of corneal prostheses.

During his postdoctoral training in Prof. Mehta’s research group at the Singapore Eye Research Institute, Dr. Riau established his research portfolio in translational ocular bioengineering. Currently, his research focuses are in developing a fully synthetic corneal prosthesis as a tool for corneal blindness, repurposing and recycling discarded corneas for tissue engineering and refractive surgeries, corneal cell therapy and exosome administration to treat corneal opacities due to surgical trauma, infections and inflammatory eye conditions, and mitigating microplastics in ophthalmic practices.

Dr. Riau is also committed to teaching and training international clinical fellows, medical students, final-year-project students, and interns in lab research, guiding them to produce research articles and conference abstracts.
