About

Dr. Marvin Chua is a Consultant in Endocrinology in the Department of General Medicine at Sengkang General Hospital (SKH). He received his medical degree from the National University of Singapore, completed his advanced speciality training in Endocrinology at National University Hospital and joined SKH in 2018. Dr Marvin sees a wide range of Endocrinology conditions including Diabetes Mellitus, thyroid disorders and osteoporosis, and has a subspecialty interest in obesity and lipid disorders.

Dr Marvin is an integral member of the Sengkang General Hospital Weight Improvement Therapy and Complete Health (SWITCH) team from its time of inception, which is a multidisciplinary clinical service with the main objective of helping patients embrace healthier lifestyles, achieve long-term weight loss and maintain better health. Dr Marvin has collaborated closely with physicians, bariatric surgeons and allied health professionals for continued improvement of our SWITCH clinical service and organized several public events to increase the awareness and knowledge of obesity, including the public event “Empowering Women, Healthier Families” (March 2023) and SKH Community Health Fair 2024 (August 2024). This has led to SKH being accredited as Singapore’s first European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) International Affiliate Centre for Obesity Management in January 2025, which is a prestigious accreditation given to centres that demonstrate excellence in obesity care. In addition, Dr Marvin is a member of the Familial Hypercholesterolemia Case Identification, Assessment and Reduction in Adverse Events (FH-CARE) study, which is a national program with the objective of increasing awareness of Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) and improving early diagnosis. FH is a genetic disease that leads to high cholesterol levels and increases the risk of heart disease in young people, thus early diagnosis and treatment is essential.

Dr Marvin is a strong advocate of excellent patient care and establishes good rapport with his patients. He always keeps in mind that each individual patient is unique, and tailors his treatment based on the patient’s individual circumstances as much as possible. As testament to consistent delivery of high-quality clinical care, Dr Marvin has received the You Sparkle! Silver Award in 2021, You Sparkle! Gold Award in 2022 and You Sparkle! Star Award in 2024. He has also received the Singapore Health Quality Service Gold Award in 2022 and Singapore Health Quality Service Star Award in 2023.

Dr Marvin holds the teaching appointments of Clinical Assistant Professor for Duke-NUS Medical School, Clinical Lecturer for NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Adjunct Lecturer for LKC School of Medicine, and has a keen interest in education for both healthcare professionals and members of the public. To that end, Dr Marvin has been featured in the popular local television program Body SOS which focuses on health-related matters. He has given live radio interviews, several public talks on obesity and written newspaper articles – in both English and Mandarin. Dr Marvin delivered the learning module “Updates in the Therapeutic Approach to Obesity in Adults”, which includes a comprehensive and practical approach to obesity, including diagnosis, pathogenesis, complications and treatment. This module has been made available on the MIMS Education website portal since December 2024. He has also contributed articles to SKOOP, which is an SKH publication distributed to general practitioners, healthcare and community partners of SKH as well as members of the public.

Dr Marvin has several research publications relevant to obesity, including the article “Current treatment landscape for obesity in Singapore” published in the Singapore Medical Journal in March 2023 – a comprehensive review of the various treatment options for obesity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Marvin observed the far-reaching impact of the pandemic on weight management, prompting him to author a series of publications including “Obesity and COVID-19: The clash of two pandemics” and “Managing patients with obesity in the post COVID-19 world: Time to sharpen the saw”. Dr Marvin has also authored several articles based on his personal experience while managing patients. For example, the article “Don't Give Up Now: The Tide Is About to Turn”, which was published in The American Journal of Medicine in 2022, was inspired after encountering a number of patients with hypercholesterolemia following significant weight loss.

Dr Marvin has been the Honorary Secretary of the Singapore Association for the Study of Obesity (SASO) since March 2021. Since its establishment in 2001, SASO aims to promote the study of obesity in Singapore including its causes, prevention and treatment. In this role, Dr Marvin has been involved in organising the annual OBES Congress since 2021, and played an integral role in the design and set up of the new SASO website, including creation of the new members’ portal.
