Dr Winson Tan graduated with MBBS(Hons), as the valedictorian of his cohort, from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore in 2009. He subsequently entered the SingHealth General Surgery Residency Programme and eventually graduated in 2015 as the valedictorian. He obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2015 and was awarded the College of Surgeon, Singapore, Gold Medal for being the top candidate in the Surgical Exit Examination.
In 2018, he went to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney and completed a Fellowship in Colorectal and Advanced Gastrointestinal Oncological Surgery. He furthered his training in colorectal cancer care by completing the Advanced Colorectal Surgical Oncology fellowship in the world-renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, USA) from 2018-2019.
He specialises in all aspects colorectal cancer treatment including the option of non-operative management in selected patients. He also specialises in the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as laser, in the treatment of benign proctology conditions like anal fistulas, hemorrhoids and pilonidal sinus.

Dr Winson Tan has published more than 20 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is also the recipient of a National Medical Research Council research grant studying the efficacy and cost effectiveness of a proposed algorithm for management of suspected appendicitis. His research achievements culminated in him being awarded the Singhealth Excellence - Distinguished Young Researcher Award in 2017. He remains actively involved in clinical, educational and translational research projects.
