Singapore launches initiative to research and treat muscle loss

A S$10 million research initiative to tackle muscle loss in Singapore’s ageing population was launched on 4 August 2025. The nationwide initiative brings together a consortium of scientists and clinicians across Singapore's three public healthcare clusters - NHG Health, National University Health System and SingHealth, including Sengkang General Hospital (SKH). More than 500 patients with sarcopenia have been identified for the research, making it the largest clinical group for sarcopenia patients in Asia. Findings from the MAGNET project have the potential to improve the design of future programmes. With its launch, Singapore is now at the forefront of global efforts to combat sarcopenia — a disease that has long been overlooked, yet significantly affects quality of life.
