GENITAL CULTURE (GONOCOCCAL)

Endocervix*, Urethra*, Anorectal*, Oropharynx*, Conjunctiva*, Bartholin gland, Skin lesions, Joint fluid, Blood specimens**

*Bedside inoculation of specimen swab(s) onto GC plate(s) in the form of a “Z”
**Inoculation of 10ml blood into BACTEC™ Plus Anaerobic/F Culture Vial (Gold cap).

• Specimen should reach the Microbiology Laboratory within 2 hours of collection.
• If delay in transportation cannot be avoided, plates/specimens MUST BE kept at room temperature.

Culture

Negative:
“No bacterial growth”
“No growth of pathogens”

Positive:
Identification of probable pathogen(s)

Negative: 2 – 4 days

Positive: 3 – 5 days*
*Depending on the number and type of organism(s) isolated
