*Bedside inoculation of specimen swab(s) onto GC plate(s) in the form of a “Z”
**Inoculation of 10ml blood into BACTEC™ Plus Anaerobic/F Culture Vial (Gold cap). 

Specimen should reach the Microbiology Laboratory within 2 hours of collection.

Gram Stain

Negative:
“No Gram negative diplococcus seen.”

Positive:
“Gram negative diplococci seen.”

2 – 4 hours

Daily

• For swab specimens, requests for gram stain and culture cannot be ordered on a single swab.
• Bacterial culture should usually be requested together with Gram stain request.

Single swab received for both gram stain and culture.
