In patients treated with rasburicase (urate-oxidase), if it is necessary to monitor their uric acid levels in blood, a strict sample-handling procedure must be followed to minimise ex vivo degradation of uric acid, which would lead to falsely low uric acid results.

Blood must be collected into a pre-chilled lithium heparin specimen tube, and sent on ice to biochemistry laboratory immediately.

Please alert biochemistry bench BEFORE sending the specimen so that the specimen can be processed as soon as practicable using special procedures.
