Medical Dermatology

The department evaluates and treats a wide variety of acute skin disorders such as skin infections and allergies; as well as a range of chronic skin disorders such as atopic eczema, psoriasis, chronic urticaria, acne, bullous pemphigoid and hair loss.

Surgical Dermatology

The department evaluates and offers surgical treatments for benign skin growths such as warts, tags, cysts; as well as a range of cancerous skin problems such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and Bowen's disease. Among the specialised procedures we perform is Mohs micrographic surgery, a gold standard treatment for high risk non-melanoma skin cancers such as basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. This technique is particularly beneficial in anatomically critical areas where maximum skin conservation is necessary, such as on the nose, and around the eyes and mouth. Additionally, skin cancer screening is also offered to patients at risk of developing skin cancer.

Aesthetic Dermatology

The department evaluates and treats common cosmetic skin conditions such as acne scars, wrinkles, sun spots, age spots and melasma using a variety of advanced techniques. Our therapeutic arsenal includes lasers, intense pulsed light, injectables, and chemical peels. Dermatology is the medical science of diagnosing and treating skin diseases affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Dermatologists are trained to diagnose and treat disorders of the skin, fat, hair, nails and oral and genital membranes. Along with treating diseases and medical conditions, dermatologists also address cosmetic issues and can help you revitalize and improve the appearance of your skin, hair and nails.

Skin conditions arise due to a number of causes, including allergies, irritants, genetic makeup, certain diseases, and immune system problems. Some of the conditions dermatologists are most likely to encounter include: Acne, cold sores, hives, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, skin cancers, bullous pemphigoid and viral warts. If you suspect you have one of these conditions, consider seeing your GP who will refer you to a dermatologist if necessary.

Acne is an inflammation of the hair follicle. It is often due to various factors including genetics, skin type, sebaceous oil production, hormones, etc.

Mild acne requires only surface treatment, such as antibacterial and drying agents. Moderate or severe acne may need both surface treatment, oral antibiotics and retinoids. For more information on these conditions and treatments available, please make an appointment with our dermatologist.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder which causes the skin to form scaly, erythematous plaques, usually on the elbows and knees. Our dermatologists will be happy to discuss the various treatment options for moderate to severe disease which are available in our hospital.

Atopic eczema is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disorder that affects about 10% of our local adult population, of whom a quarter has been found to have moderate to severe eczema. This group of people may require phototherapy, systemic or biologic treatments for their condition. For more information on these treatments, please make an appointment with our dermatologists.

Hives, also known as urticaria, are a common skin reaction that produces transient, raised, itchy rash. Prolonged hives may be bothersome and may need to be treated with long term anti-histamines or even biologic therapy for severe cases. Our dermatologists will be able to discuss more about these treatment options which are available at our hospital.

You can take the Northeast Line (purple line) towards Punggol and arrive at Sengkang MRT Station (NE16). From the MRT station, take Exit D. It is roughly a 400m walk (6 minutes) to the hospital. Alternatively, take the LRT on level 3 of Sengkang MRT Station to Cheng Lim LRT Station (SW1) and take Exit B to use the pedestrian link bridge that connects to the hospital (level 2).

Patient Care SKH Doctor on Persistent Hoarseness of Voice Dr Christina Ng, Consultant, Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, SKH, highlighted that persistent hoarseness may indicate vocal cord polyps or cysts - conditions that are common but often overlooked. With blue light laser treatment now available, this minimally invasive procedure can be performed in the clinic under local anaesthesia, enabling patients to recover faster and return home quickly on the same day. Mr Loh, an 84-year-old patient who underwent the treatment this year, found it convenient and effective, and encouraged people with similar symptoms to seek medical attention promptly rather than delay treatment.

Patient Care SKH Doctor Continues Stroke Recovery Journey Dr Jessica Ee, Former Associate Consultant, Dermatology Service, SKH, continues her inspiring recovery two years after her stroke, progressing from wheelchair use to walking with a walking stick. Also a former model, she now walks a different runway - one of rehabilitation and healing, inspiring others with her perseverance. Dr Cao Taige, Consultant, Dermatology Service, SKH, who is also a registered acupuncturist with the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner Board and provides acupuncture services at SKH, noted that acupuncture has good effects in post-stroke recovery and praised Jessica's determination in rehabilitation. Jessica remains focused on daily improvements as she works towards her goal of returning to work.
