Physiotherapy

The Department of Physiotherapy at Sengkang General Hospital provides physiotherapy services in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. Through a holistic and clinically reasoned approach, it aims to help people of all ages and abilities to optimise mobility and function. This is often done with patient-specific health goals in mind – whether it is to return to independent living, pre-injury status, or a sport or activity of choice. By performing assessments and applying clinical reasoning, individualised treatment plans are drawn up to address individuals' needs. Additionally, appropriate education is provided for individuals to understand their conditions. These are done in tandem with other healthcare professionals working in multi-disciplinary teams to ensure optimal and holistic care.

With professional, competent and service orientated staff, the department aims to promote physical independence by enhancing function - particularly in the areas involving the musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory systems – while encouraging individuals to assume responsibility for their health and well-being.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is a comprehensive programme of exercise, education, and behavioural modification that aims to improve the physical, social and psychological condition of people with cardiac conditions. Cardiac rehabilitation guides and supports people with cardiac conditions on their quest to recovery, allowing them to return to the community following any cardiac event.

"If there were a pill that cost very little, reduced cardiac deaths by 27%, improved quality of life, and reduced anxiety and depression, every cardiac patient in Europe would be expected to take it. There is no such pill, but taking part in a cardiac rehabilitation programme can provide all these benefits." – Professor Bob Lewin, European Society of Cardiology, Amsterdam 2005.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

When you have a lung condition, you can find it hard to walk around or perform your daily activities without getting breathless.
Breathlessness can be very frightening. To avoid circumstances where they might become breathless, people with a lung condition often reduce the amount of activity they do each day. In the long run, they will become unfit, tired, and more breathless.
If you are experiencing this, you may benefit from the pulmonary rehabilitation programme.
Pulmonary rehabilitation aims to help you cope with your breathlessness, and also to feel stronger / fitter at the same time.

How will pulmonary rehabilitation help me?

  • Increase your ability to perform activity/exercise
    • You should be able to walk a longer distance, and you will probably feel less breathless when performing daily activities.
  • Help you cope with your breathlessness
    • Pulmonary rehabilitation should help you to better manage your breathlessness by strengthening your muscles, increasing your understanding of your breathlessness rather than changing your pulmonary / lung function.

 Vestibular Rehabilitation

  • Are you experiencing vertiginous sensations (feels like the room is spinning) when you turn or get up from bed?
  • Are you experiencing visual disturbances, aural (ear) symptoms and/ or imbalance in your activities of daily living (eg driving, cooking, shopping or even getting up from bed)?
  • Have you been diagnosed with a vestibular (inner ear/ balance) disorder by your Doctor?
  • If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, you may benefit from vestibular rehabilitation therapy with a Physiotherapist!
  • Physiotherapists with specialized training in this area will be able to:
  • Assess and identify peripheral vestibular issues (This includes the use of specialised equipment such as  optical goggles and computerized dynamic posturography to objectively quantify the disorder)
  • Prescribe appropriate treatment to improve your quality of life through:
    • Improved balance
    • Reduced falls
    • Reduced sensations of dizziness
    • Reduced issues related to vestibular disorientation.
