Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Service

The Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Service at Sengkang General Hospital comprise specialists within the Department of General Surgery who have a sub-speciality focus on Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgical Oncology, Bariatric (Obesity and Metabolic syndrome) Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery (key-hole surgery) and Diagnostic & Therapeutic Endoscopy. We provide modern and evidence-based surgical management of obesity and metabolic syndrome, various benign and malignant upper digestive tract diseases and general surgical conditions.

Our specialists work closely with other specialties such as medical and radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, physiotherapists and dieticians to provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with conditions such as diseases of the esophagus, stomach & intestines, gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST), bile duct and gallbladder stones. The SKH Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Service also provide around the clock acute general surgical and emergency endoscopy services and perform surgery for hernias and conditions of the spleen.

The unit also works with allied health professionals like dietitians, psychologists, physiotherapists, to tackle obesity and metabolic disorders. This is part of the SWITCH Programme (Sengkang Weight Improvement Treatment and Complete Health). The programme is run by a multidisciplinary team consisting of doctors (surgeons and physicians), dietitians, physiotherapists, psychologists and nurses. The team works together to deliver a comprehensive programme, based on the latest scientific evidence, to assist and guide patients in their weight loss journey and treat underlying issues or medical conditions that are related to obesity.
