Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) Service

Hepato-pancreato-biliary diseases are common and often require surgery as the primary form of treatment.

Our team of surgeons are experienced at performing complex operations of the liver, pancreas, bile ducts and gallbladder. We offer both open and minimally-invasive (laparoscopic) procedures for surgical treatment of hepato-pancreato-biliary conditions. The use of minimally-invasive procedures benefit patients by allowing smaller incisions, less post-operative pain, faster recovery and a shorter hospital stay.

The HPB service works closely with other departments to bring our patients high quality multidisciplinary care. Together with our colleagues from Gastroenterology, Interventional Radiology and Medical Oncology, we aim to provide the full spectrum of services necessary for the management of hepato-pancreato-biliary diseases. This multidisciplinary team meets regularly to discuss complex cases in detail and provide recommendations for the best treatment modality for each individual patient.

If you have questions, or want to learn more about the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the liver, pancreas, bile ducts or gallbladder, make an appointment with the SKH Hepato-pancreato-biliary team. You may also attain a referral form your family physician from the polyclinic or your local GP clinic.

What are some common hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) conditions?

One of the most common benign HPB conditions is gallstones and its related conditions. Gallstones frequently present with pain and upper abdominal bloatedness. Gallstones can also result in cholecystitis, cholangitis and pancreatitis. The management of symptomatic gallstone disease is surgery to remove the gallbladder and the stones.

Primary malignant diseases of the HPB system are not common and include hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer), pancreatic adenocarcinoma (pancreas cancer) and cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). Though uncommon, prompt diagnosis and treatment is required to ensure the best outcomes for patients.

What are some symptoms that I should look out for?

Symptoms related to HPB diseases can include, but are not limited to:

  • Abdominal swelling
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Jaundice—a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes
  • Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss
  • Pain throughout the upper abdomen
  • Pale-colored or bloody stool

If you are experiencing one of these symptoms, call your doctor immediately.

How are liver, pancreatic, biliary & related diseases diagnosed?

A diagnosis usually begins with the doctor talking to you about your medical history and doing a physical exam. Your doctor will also ask questions about your personal and family history to determine if you're at higher risk for a specific disorder. Today's advanced diagnostic tools are more accurate and less invasive than ever before.

What treatments are available for hepato-pancreato-biliary diseases?

The treatment of hepato-pancreato-biliary diseases is mainly surgical. The HPB service performs minimally invasive and conventional surgery, and delivers nonsurgical treatment options, as needed. Every approach is patient-centered, with the goal to help you get better and stay healthy.
