Rehabilitation Medicine

Synonym(s):

The Rehabilitation Medicine service provides comprehensive, interdisciplinary medical rehabilitation and general medical care for patients with disability resulting from illness or accident. These include patients with stroke, hip fractures, amputations, spinal cord injury, trauma and traumatic brain injury and complex medical conditions spanning all age groups. The goal is to achieve optimal functional ability and mobility, enabling a discharge home, reintegration into the family, work and society.

Rehabilitation Medicine Physicians work with other specialists and allied health professionals to deliver comprehensive, holistic rehabilitation and care to adult patients with acquired or congenital disabilities using a person-centred approach to achieve optimal functional outcomes.

We provide Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation services and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Medicine Consults to both inpatients and outpatients, who will be seen in the Rehabilitation Medicine clinics.

Inpatient Services

We run the Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Service in the Rehabilitation Ward in SKH and do inpatient Rehabilitation Medicine consults in both the General Ward and Intensive Care Unit in Sengkang General Hospital.

Conditions seen inpatient at SKH but not limited to:

  • Stroke Rehabilitation Assessments (both at acute and chronic) and management of complications of stroke, including spasticity management
  • Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation assessment and management
  • Spinal Cord Injury (both traumatic and non-traumatic) Rehabilitation assessment and management
  • Amputee Rehabilitation assessments and management (we work closely with the SGH multidisciplinary amputee clinic for patients who qualify for prosthetics following major lower limb amputations like BKA, AKA)
  • Return to work Rehabilitation assessments and management for acquired injury for non- work related injuries/ illnesses
  • Assessment and management for Adults (above 16) with childhood or juvenile onset disability.
  • Management of non-surgical musculoskeletal disorders and Rehabilitation post joint replacements
  • Rehabilitation management of sequelae post ICU admission.
  • Cancer Rehabilitation assessments and management
  • Rehabilitation assessments and management from impairments or activity limitations arising from disorders of the heart, lungs or other medical disorders
  • Rehabilitation assessments and management of Neurological disorders like neurodegenerative disorders (eg Parkinson's disease), neuro-inflammatory disorders.

Outpatient Rehabilitation

The Outpatient Rehabilitation service provides comprehensive individualied evaluation and treatment for individuals who have physical and cognitive impairments. A personalised treatment plan will be developed in conjunction with the patient and the physician for optimal functional outcomes, which will include the involvement of our allied health colleagues in SKH and incorporating the latest rehabilitation techniques and technology.

Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Medicine Clinics

  • We provide comprehensive Spinal Cord Injury (both traumatic and non-traumatic) Rehabilitation assessment and management in this clinic

Congenital, Childhood Onset, Cerebral Palsy Clinic (CCCP clinic)

  • Assessment and management for patients (above 16) with childhood or juvenile onset disability, including patients with Cerebral Palsy and patients with Intellectual Disability
  • Aged 16 and above
  • We accept referrals from all sources, including transition cases from Paediatricians.
    We have plans to set up further subspecialty clinics and collaborate with partners from other specialties in the future to better serve patients with both congenital and acquired disability

Patient Care SKH Doctor and Physiotherapist on Neck Pain and Ways to Protect Your Neck Dr Chen Haobin, Senior Consultant, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, SKH, explained that neck pain is commonly caused by cervical spine degeneration, leading to neck soreness and stiffness. Nerve compression from bone spurs or herniated discs may cause radiating pain, numbness, or weakness. He advised seeking medical attention for persistent neck pain that cannot be relieved, severe neck pain after trauma, neck pain accompanied by unexplained fever or limb numbness, and symptoms lasting beyond six weeks. He also cautioned against forceful neck manipulation. Dr Bernice Liu, Senior Principal Physiotherapist, Department of Physiotherapy, SKH, shared that exercise therapy is key to managing neck pain and demonstrated simple exercises suitable for work and travelling. She advised reducing exercise intensity if mild numbness or tingling occurs during exercise, and to seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or affect coordination.

Patient Care SKH Physiotherapist on Chronic Dizziness Ng Zhao Xiang, Senior Physiotherapist, SKH shared insights on managing chronic dizziness caused by inner ear problems such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and vestibular imbalance. He demonstrated three balance training exercises including vestibular-ocular reflex training, balance exercises on soft surfaces, and gait training with head turns to help patients improve their condition. Zhao Xiang emphasised the importance of performing these exercises in safe environments with support nearby and encouraged patients to seek professional physiotherapy support for personalised treatment plans.
