Vascular and Endovascular Service

Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Service, part of the Surgery team at Sengkang General Hospital (SKH), places strong emphasis on quality clinical care, innovative methods of evaluation and treatment, education and training, and clinical and basic research in the treatment of vascular diseases.

The SKH Vascular and Endovascular Service is a specialised unit that provides treatment for a comprehensive range of vascular diseases. Our surgeons have extensive vascular and endovascular surgical experience.

The team specialises in endovascular surgery, which helps to fix blood vessels without having to make incisions. This technique results in less pain, quicker recovery and a lower risk of complications. In addition to this minimally invasive endovascular surgery, our surgeons' also have extensive experience in open surgery, which makes them skilfully qualified to manage all vascular surgical patients. Our team of vascular surgeons at SKH have internationally recognised research which investigates novel technologies and vascular devices (stents) that allow them to more effectively repair aneurysms and blockages. They use the latest techniques with high precision facilities to provide the best possible care.  By offering the entire spectrum of therapeutic options, patients can be assured that they are receiving the most appropriate therapy for their conditions. Patients will have access to the entire range of therapeutic options, and ultimately the most appropriate treatment for their conditions.

The team collaborates closely with colleagues from internal medicine, family medicine, endocrinology, cardiology, neurology, interventional radiology, and podiatry. With this approach, each patient receives a multidisciplinary, and yet individualised, diagnostic evaluation and treatment strategy.

Our team of vascular surgeon’s academic work has been published in high impact scientific journals throughout the world with high citation rates. As recognised vascular leaders they are committed to providing vascular training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and they are involved in conducting workshops and lectures both locally and internationally.

Our Clinical Services

The SKH Vascular and Endovascular Service team evaluate and manage patients with following vascular symptoms /complaints:

Aneurysms and Dissections

An aneurysm is a balloon-like bulge in an artery. It can form in arteries of all sizes and large aneurysms can cause fatal bleeding if left untreated. Dissections are tears on the wall of arteries. At SKH, our team of vascular surgeons are well equipped and trained to handle the following aneurysm and dissection types:

  • Abdominal, thoracic and thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms
  • Peripheral aneurysms
  • Visceral aneurysms
  • Aortic and peripheral arterial dissections

Diabetic limb and peripheral vascular disease

  • Claudication
  • Rest pain
  • Leg ulcers
  • Discoloured/dusky/gangrenous limb
  • Diabetic foot infections

Visceral arterial occlusive disease

  • Abdominal pain due to mesenteric artery disease

Carotid disease

Carotid artery disease occurs when fatty deposits clog the blood vessels that deliver blood to your brain and head. This blockage can increase your risk of stroke. We treat the following diseases:

  • Carotid stenosis and stroke prevention
  • Carotid aneurysm
  • Carotid body tumour

Veins

  • Varicose veins
  • Venous ulcers
  • Lower limb swelling
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Venous occlusions
  • Venous stenosis (May Thurner Syndrome)

Dialysis access in renal failure patients

  • Haemodialysis access creation
  • Peritoneal dialysis access surgery
  • Malfunctioning arteriovenous fistula or grafts
  • Thrombosed (clotted) arteriovenous fistula or grafts

Vascular malformations

  • Arteriovenous malformations

Thoracic outlet syndromes (TOS)

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a group of disorders in which blood vessels or nerves in your thoracic outlet become abnormally compressed. This generally causes discomfort and pain in the neck and shoulders, while also numbing your fingers. Our vascular surgeons treat:

  • Venous TOS (Paget Schroetter Disease)
  • Arterial TOS
  • Neurogenic TOS

Lymphatics

The lymphatic system is a complex network of tissues and organs that help remove toxins, waste and other unwanted materials from your body. At SKH, you can be treated for:

  • Lymphoedema

FAQs

What is the RFA (Radiofrequency Ablation) procedure?

The RFA (Radiofrequency Ablation) procedure is a minimally invasive varicose veins treatment for superficial venous reflux. A thin catheter is inserted into the vein through a small opening. The catheter delivers radiofrequency energy to the vein wall, causing it to heat, collapse, and seal shut.

Is varicose vein treatment painful?

Patients report feeling little, if any, pain during and after our varicose vein removal procedures. Tumescent solution is a local anesthetic that our vascular surgeons use to desensitize the treatment area.

How soon after vein treatment will my symptoms improve?

Most patients report a noticeable improvement in their symptoms within 2 weeks following their vascular surgery.

Are compression stockings helpful?

Often patients like to wear medical compression stockings, but sometimes pressure dressings are all that is necessary for the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins. Some patients do report a decrease in their symptoms with the wearing of these stockings.

How do I choose a Vascular Surgeon for vein removal?

It is very important to choose accredited Vascular Surgeon when looking for vein treatment because vascular surgeons who are certified are specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disorders and have had more intense training in vascular surgery than any other vein doctors. Make an appointment with us online, or browse our Find a doctor directory - it provides you with a comprehensive reference to our vascular surgeons including their qualification, background and awards.
