The Infectious Disease services at Sengkang General Hospital is dedicated in providing quality clinical care, prevention, treatment and management of infectious diseases. We offer inpatient and outpatient clinical services related to the care of patients with a wide range of infectious diseases, including patients with underlying immunocompromising conditions. We strive to provide care that is comprehensive and timely with early and well-coordinated transition to outpatient care.

The team includes infectious disease physicians, nurses, pharmacists and patient service associates, working together with other clinicians, microbiologists, infection preventionists, hospital epidemiologists and other healthcare professionals. We are well-equipped to manage various infections ranging in complexity and provide consultative care for patients with particularly challenging problems in the diagnosis, management and therapy of various infectious diseases.

We are committed in working together with other physicians in the community to improve the overall population’s health care and quality of life by enhancing the application of its patient care delivery. Along with diagnosing and treating a wide array of infections and infectious disease, our team of specialists will go through great lengths to prevent infections long before they occur. This is done through physician education, antibiotic stewardship, vaccinations and purposeful health education in the community, which our team of medical staff are also involved in. Through our antibiotic stewardship programme, we play an important role in improving antibiotic prescription to effectively treat infections, protect our patients from unnecessary antibiotic usage and halt the spread of antibiotic resistance.

Our team is also instrumental in contributing to our hospital and national infectious disease outbreak response. We are also actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.

In addition, our team of physicians are involved in a variety of clinical research activities related to the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases, closely collaborating with various research partners from the hospital and from other institutions.

- The Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) service at the hospital offers patients administration of intravenous and intramuscular antibiotics to patients in the outpatient setting.
General Infectious Diseases including management of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO)

What is the definition of an infectious disease and communicable disease?

Infectious disease is an illness caused by the spread of prions or micro-organisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites) to humans, animals or the environment, including food and water.

Communicable Disease is a disease capable of being transmitted from an infected person or species to a susceptible host, either directly or indirectly.

How are infectious diseases commonly spread?

Person-to-person contact through skin wounds.
Any object (fomite) has the potential to be a carrier of an infectious agent. Dirty clothes and linens, utensils and unsterilised hospital equipment are some examples of breeding ground for bacteria.
Droplets in the air e.g. when an infected person coughs or sneezes
Airborne infections like tuberculosis, varicella, measles
Contaminated food and drinks
Vector-borne infections such as malaria and dengue fever spread by mosquitoes
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, syphilis and gonorrhoea involve an exchange of bodily fluids, usually through unsafe sexual activities. Some STIs may also be transmitted through transfusion of blood and blood products, and contaminated needles and syringes.

Dermatology is the medical science of diagnosing and treating skin diseases affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Dermatologists are trained to diagnose and treat disorders of the skin, fat, hair, nails and oral and genital membranes. Along with treating diseases and medical conditions, dermatologists also address cosmetic issues and can help you revitalize and improve the appearance of your skin, hair & nails.

Skin conditions arise due to a number of causes, including allergies, irritants, genetic makeup, certain diseases, and immune system problems. Some of the conditions dermatologists are most likely to encounter include: Acne, cold sores, hives, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, skin cancers, bullous pemphigoid and viral warts. If you suspect you have one of these conditions, consider seeing your GP who will refer you to a dermatologist if necessary.

Acne is an inflammation of the hair follicle. It is often due to various factors including genetics, skin type, sebaceous oil production, hormones, etc.

Mild acne requires only surface treatment, such as antibacterial and drying agents. Moderate or severe acne may need both surface treatment, oral antibiotics and retinoids. For more information on these conditions and treatments available, please make an appointment with our dermatologist.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder which causes the skin to form scaly, erythematous plaques, usually on the elbows and knees. Our dermatologists will be happy to discuss the various treatment options for moderate to severe disease which are available in our hospital.

Atopic eczema is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disorder that affects about 10% of our local adult population, of whom a quarter has been found to have moderate to severe eczema. This group of people may require phototherapy, systemic or biologic treatments for their condition. For more information on these treatments, please make an appointment with our dermatologists.

Hives, also known as urticaria, are a common skin reaction that produces transient, raised, itchy rash. Prolonged hives may be bothersome and may need to be treated with long term anti-histamines or even biologic therapy for severe cases. Our dermatologists will be able to discuss more about these treatment options which are available at our hospital.

You can take the Northeast Line (purple line) towards Punggol and arrive at Sengkang MRT Station (NE16). From the MRT station, take Exit D. It is roughly a 400m walk (6 minutes) to the hospital. Alternatively, take the LRT on level 3 of Sengkang MRT Station to Cheng Lim LRT Station (SW1) and take Exit B to use the pedestrian link bridge that connects to the hospital (level 2).
