FAQs

What is internal medicine?

Internal medicine is a broad field that aims to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide range of diseases in adult patients. From managing general health to acute conditions to chronic illnesses, internal medicine doctors have an expansive knowledge of illness in adults and are well trained to know when a referral to a specialist is needed, and to which specialist. Internal medicine physicians or doctors are also commonly known as internists.

What does an internal medicine physician treat?

Internists treat a broad range of medical conditions. Some of these conditions include allergies, skin disorders, asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, arthritis, heart failure, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, gastroesophageal reflux, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, anxiety and depression. Internal medicine physicians also often manage complex patients with undifferentiated symptoms and multiple comorbidities.

What is the difference between internal medicine and family medicine?

While there is overlap between these two branches of medicine, the key difference resides in their patient demographics. Internal medicine focuses exclusively on adult medicine, while family medicine typically sees all the members of a family, regardless of their age. It is quite common for internal medicine doctors to work primarily in hospitals while family medicine doctors work in outpatient settings.
