Profile

Dr Sharmini joined Sengkang General Hospital in February 2017 as an Associate Consultant in the Department of General Surgery, subspecializing in Colorectal Surgery. She completed both her primary and secondary schooling in Malaysia until she was awarded a full scholarship by Bosworth Tutorial College, UK to complete her A-Levels studies in Northampton, UK. She also succeeded in achieving a full scholarship from the Malaysian Government to complete her MBChB degree from the University of Edinburgh Medical School, UK in 2005 and was accepted for specialty training by the West of Scotland Deanery, UK of which she achieved her Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) specialising in colorectal surgery in 2015. She was then awarded the 'John Goliger Fellowship' at the St James University Hospital, Leeds for 15 months where she was provided with comprehensive exposure to clinical, technological aspects of modern and advanced colorectal surgery including minimally-invasive and robotic surgery. During her fellowship, she gained valuable experience on the full complement of pelvic floor services which included sacral nerve stimulation, anterior sphincter repair, robotic rectopexy and the application of the FENIX device. 

Besides, Dr Sharmini did her thesis on 'Outcome of Patients with soft tissue tumours of the abdomen and pelvis' and obtained her MD awarded by the University of Glasgow in 2017.

Dr Sharmini also has an interest in clinical education where she has organised regular clinical bedside sessions, interactive discussions as well as participated in the running of various surgical courses and conferences for both the undergraduate and postgraduate students. She was also involved in managing the Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) for the final year medical exams.
