Nurses' Merit Award 2023

The Nurses' Merit Award is given by the Ministry of Health to nurses who gave demonstrated consistent and outstanding performance, participated in professional development, and have made contributions to promote the nursing profession.

"Being a nurse for 17 years has shaped my outlook on life. I believe that every life is precious and that every encounter with my patients is an opportunity to improve their overall physical and emotional well-being.

I find nursing to be a unique calling. It gives me the privilege to care for people and their families when they are at their most vulnerable. It is also a privilege to work alongside like-minded colleagues to empower patients with knowledge and skills to increase their resilience when facing challenges caused by their health conditions, and help them live well and age well meaningfully."

– Cai Hui Mei, Nurse Clinician, Sengkang General Hospital

"Nursing is more than just treating a health issue. It is providing holistic care that goes beyond caring for a patient's physical health but also supporting their emotional, social and spiritual well-being.

I am motivated to do my best in caring for patients every day thanks to the guidance, support and good learning examples from my Senior Nurse Manager and fellow senior nurses."

- Chew Hui Chin, Nurse Clinician, Sengkang General Hospital

"As a nurse for 20 years, I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience. The ability to make a positive impact during challenging times, witnessing patients' recovery, being part of a supportive healthcare team, and being a role model to junior nurses and students has been immensely rewarding."

- Junaidah Binte Othman, Principal Enrolled Nurse, Sengkang General Hospital

"Nursing has been a fruitful journey for me. Nothing beats the joy of seeing my patients get better and stronger each day. There was a young patient who suffered from brain injury and underwent rehabilitation. His speech, mobility, and activities of daily living were affected initially. Although he was with us for nearly a year, he overcame all difficulties and went home triumphant as he was able to speak and walk with assistance again! He taught me a valuable lesson about resilience.

To aspiring nurses, nursing is tough, but positivity and courage make you stronger and tougher."

- Elizabeth Khoo, Senior Staff Nurse, Sengkang General Hospital

"I have been working as an operating theatre (OT) nurse for 21 years, inspired by my father, a doctor who has helped many patients. In the OT, I strive to reassure patients and alleviate their fears. One memorable experience was soothing an elderly dementia patient who was in severe pain. I held her hands and spoke to her in Cantonese, which helped to comfort her. This further motivated my passion towards patient care.

I would also strongly encourage nurses to embrace challenges with a positive mindset. When we were activated during a construction collapse in 2017, I responded with composure to the crisis by implementing the necessary measures. This showed me the importance of being open-minded, adaptive, and constantly striving to improve in both work and life."

- Lin Lianqiao, Nurse Clinician, Sengkang General Hospital

"Working in the ICU can be demanding and fast-paced, but having witnessed the fragility of life daily, I find it fulfilling when a patient's life is saved during a medical emergency.

Being able to contribute to a patient's recovery and knowing that I can make a meaningful impact during their challenging times by providing them and their loved ones with compassionate care and support encourages me to continue doing my best."

- Qiu Lurong, Nurse Clinician, Sengkang General Hospital
