Leuprorelin - What is it for

Leuprolide is a medicine that is used in the treatment of breast or prostate cancer. It works by reducing the level of hormones estrogen or testosterone respectively.

What side effects can Leuprorelin cause?

  • Worsening of symptoms manifested by cancer-related pain, bone pain and muscle weakness (tumour flare)
  • Hot flushes may occur during the first few weeks of treatment
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Pain and redness at injection site
  • Reduced bone mineral density
  • Increased blood sugar levels
  • Decreased libido

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Allergic reaction e.g. rashes, swelling, breathing difficulty
  • Severe bone, muscle or joint pain
  • Unresolved nausea, vomiting and dizziness
  • Chest pain or breathing difficulty
  • Menstrual bleeding that still persists
