Megestrol - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Megestrol cause?

Megestrol is usually well tolerated and serious side effects are rare.

  • Weight gain, due to increased appetite
  • Nausea may occur inititally
    If this happens, take your tablets after food.

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Signs of a blood clot e.g. warmth, pain, redness and discoloration on arm or leg
  • Swelling of hands, feet or lower legs which causes discomfort
  • Sudden onset of cough, chest pain or shortness of breath
  • For women: Unexpected bleeding or discharge from the vagina

Before taking Megestrol , what precautions must I follow?

  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any other medical conditions e.g. history of blood clots, diabetes.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding: Megestrol should not be taken at the same time.
