Internal medicine is a broad field that aims to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide range of diseases in adult patients. From managing general health to acute conditions to chronic illnesses, internal medicine doctors have an expansive knowledge of illness in adults and are well trained to know when a referral to a specialist is needed, and to which specialist. Internal medicine physicians or doctors are also commonly known as internists.
Internal medicine is an expansive field with which prevents, diagnoses and treats a wide array of conditions, including allergies, skin disorders, asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, arthritis heart failure, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, anxiety and depression, to name a few. Internal medicine doctors often deal with diseases that involve multiple organ systems so taking a patient’s medical history into account is vital.
While there is overlap between these two branches of medicine, the key difference resides in their patient demographics. Internal medicine focuses exclusively on adult medicine, while family medicine typically sees all the members of a family, regardless of their age. It is quite common for internal medicine doctors to work primarily in hospitals while family medicine doctors work in outpatient settings.

We provide comprehensive care to patients suffering from both common and complex disorders. In many cases, any one illness can affect more than one organ at the same time, which is why we work closely with specialists from a variety of fields. SKH’s internal medicine doctors also engage in a diverse range of activities, including outpatient care, inpatient care, and research.
