Medical Nutrition Therapy for Osteoporosis

Medical Nutrition Therapy for Osteoporosis - What it is

1) How will you benefit from seeing a dietitian?
You will benefit from seeing a dietitian if you are at risk of or diagnosed with osteoporosis, and want to learn how to modify your diet and increase your calcium intake.

2) The objective of the medical nutrition therapy
The objective is to help you understand your condition and equip you with the relevant nutrition information to modify your diet on having adequate calcium and vitamin D for optimal bone health.

3) What is covered in the session?
During the consultation, the dietitian will perform a detailed nutritional assessment and collect the following information:

  • Weight history
  • Blood calcium and vitamin D levels
  • Bone Mineral Density (BMD)
  • Dietary habits including calcium and vitamin D intake, meal pattern and lifestyle
  • Consumption of mineral supplements i.e. calcium, vitamin D supplements

The dietitian will then provide you with advice on:

  • Basic knowledge of osteoporosis and its related health consequences
  • How to identify sources of nutrients in the diet that affect bone density e.g. calcium, vitamin D
  • Importance of diet, exercise and/or supplement to prevent further bone mineral loss
  • Optimising your diet and increasing calcium intake
  • Individualised dietary recommendations

Dietary changes will be reviewed regularly and further nutrition recommendations and relevant information will be provided accordingly.
